How much lawn can a robot mower really handle?
Rated capacity versus real capacity: battery, mowing hours, obstacles and why we plan for 70 percent of the box figure.

Rated area assumes a perfect lawn
A mower rated for half an acre can cover half an acre of open, flat, obstacle-free grass if it runs most of the day, most days. Real lawns have beds, trees, furniture and slopes, and real owners want the mower to finish in a few hours so the yard is free. We size mowers at about 70 percent of rated capacity for a typical suburban lawn and 50 percent for one with heavy obstacles or slopes.
The variables that eat capacity
Slope drains batteries faster. Obstacles force turning, which is slow. Narrow passages mean repeated transits. Wet or long grass halves cutting speed. Systematic RTK stripes cover ground more efficiently than random-pattern wire mowers, which is why an RTK mower with a smaller rated area can finish sooner.
Mowing hours are the real capacity
Manufacturers rate area assuming the mower runs long hours every day. If you want the yard free by noon, or quiet in the evening, or the mower to skip the weekend, the usable capacity shrinks in proportion. Two questions decide it: how many hours a day can it run, and how much does the lawn's shape slow it down. A model that finishes a 7,000-square-foot lawn in three hours on a good day will take five when the grass is wet and the beds are in bloom.
Measure, do not guess
Most people overestimate their lawn. A quarter-acre lot has perhaps 6,000 to 8,000 square feet of actual grass after the house, drive and beds. Yard Truth outlines the lawn from satellite imagery and lets you correct it, then sizes mowers on the mowable area rather than the lot size.
Questions people ask
- Should I oversize the mower?
- Moderately. A mower with headroom finishes faster and lasts longer, but a very large mower is wider and may not fit passages.
- Can one mower do an acre?
- Several models are rated for an acre or more. On an acre with slopes and trees, plan for a model rated for 1.5 acres.
