Robot mowers with pets and kids: the safety features that matter

Lift and tilt sensors, object detection, blade design, and habits that keep the yard safe.

Every mower stops when lifted; not every mower sees a hedgehog

Lift and tilt sensors that stop the blades instantly are universal. What separates models is forward detection: ultrasonic sensors and cameras that spot a dog, a child or a toy and stop or steer around it before contact. If pets or small children use the lawn while the mower runs, put object detection at the top of the list, and prefer models whose cameras are rated for small objects and low light.

Blades and speed

Small pivoting razor blades on a disc stop fast and cause less harm on contact than a fixed heavy blade. Mowers travel slowly, under walking pace, which makes them easy to avoid. Even so, the manufacturers' advice is right: do not let small children play on the lawn while it is being mowed, and schedule mowing for times the yard is empty.

Habits that matter more than features

Schedule mowing for times the yard is empty, typically mornings on weekdays. Keep the cutting height conservative, because a high deck leaves more room for a paw or a small toy to pass under the sensors. Check the lawn for hoses, ropes and cables before the first run of the day; the mower will find them otherwise. And keep the app's stop button on your home screen for the first month, until the routine is set.

Dogs and the lawn

Dog waste and a blade disc do not mix. Owners of mowers with pet detection report far fewer messes; the rest scan the lawn before a run. Chewers sometimes attack the mower or the wire; RTK and vision mowers remove the wire from the equation.

Questions people ask

Will the mower hurt my dog?
Contact injuries are rare and the blades stop on lift or tilt. Models with object detection avoid pets; without it, keep pets inside during mowing.
Can kids start the mower?
Mowers require a PIN or the app to start, and stop if lifted. Keep the PIN private.
